Basic Equipment Continued...
Guitar Straps- When it comes to guitar straps, it's really up to the person. For the beginner,
any guitar strap will do since most of the practicing is done sitting down. For standing I like a
wide padded strap that doesn't slip, and is easily adjustable. I also like straps that have strong
leather or suede ends that aren't too stiff, but still sturdy.
Shoulder Rests- Shoulder rests are also very personal. I like the Kun rests because they are
comfortable, they stay on the violin, and they're very durable. Spending a little extra money on a
rest is really worth it. Don't forget that they sell rests to adjust to different size violins.
Strings- My most favorite brand of strings for both instruments is D'Addario. The number one
reason is that they last a long time. The environmentally friendly packaging is sealed in recycled
plastic instead of paper envelopes, and the strings remain fresh in the package, even if you've
had them around for a few years. On the instrument, they don't corrode very fast and have
great tone. Another reason I like them is that they're not very expensive- even the violin
strings (depending on where you buy them). Other highly recommended violin strings are
Obligato, Evah Pirazzi, and Dominants. Most guitar players use D'Addario, but have also liked
Fender Bullets.
Folder- Surprised? Folders can really be any folder they want, but three ring binders are also
nice- especially if they have pockets. I three-hole punch handouts (unless it's punching out
music) if the student chooses to purchase, or already has, a binder. A few students have used a
zippered binder so they can put their books in it.
I hope this helps!
