Basic Equipment List
This list consists of what just about every music
student needs. Of course, since I am a violin and
guitar teacher, there may be a few things that only
these two instruments would need that others
wouldn't. Think of this list like a basic school
supply list.
These are things they shouldn't do without...
1. A music stand. It doesn't have to be a fancy one, but it is necessary. Fold up
music stands are inexpensive and great for rooms that are small where the stand
needs to be taken down. The fold ups are also good for trips and playing at
Grandma's house. A sturdier option is a solid stand, but can't be put away as
easily. There are some that are solid and fold up- best of both worlds!
2. A Metronome. A metronome is a device that keeps the beat. There are many
different varieties of these. Any metronome will do.
3. A Tuner or pitch pipe. I prefer the tuner over the pitch pipe because it is
easier for the student to use. A tuner tells you when the note is exactly in tune
instead of having to rely on an untrained ear. A guitar tuner is sufficient and less
expensive, however, violin students may want a chromatic tuner (a tuner that has
all the notes not just the open string notes) so they can test intonation. A pitch
pipe is the least expensive, but again, the student has to rely on an untrained ear in
order to match pitches.
4. A Guitar Strap. For guitar students of course! A strap will help to hold the
guitar in place so that the student doesn't have to hold the guitar up with his or her
hand and has greater mobility. It also keeps the guitar from sliding off the
student's lap (always a bonus!). One size fits most.
5. A Shoulder Rest. This one's for the violinist. There are many types of these.
The beginner may want to just purchase a foam rest that rubber bands on to the
violin. An easier option for the student is one that attaches much easier and is
easier to carry. There are many shoulder rests that adjust to the different sizes of
the violin so that you don't have to buy a rest every time your virtuoso to be
grows into a new violin. Shar music, an online store, has tons of different styles
and types- more than I have seen in any store.
6. An Extra Set Of Strings. Strings like to break when you least want them to.
No string player should be without an extra set.
7. A String Winder and Wire Cutter. This is another one for future Eddie Van
Halens. A string winder helps make the process of changing strings MUCH easier
and is very inexpensive. A wire cutter is for cutting off excess string because the
whole string is not wound around the peg. Planet Waves makes an all in one
which is very convenient, but more expensive than buying the two separately.
8. A Folder. This one's for my students. I like to give handouts and notes, and
this is better than sticking them in the book where they could easily fall out.
My Favorites
Stand- Manhassett music stands are very sturdy and even come in the fold up
style.
Tuner and Metronome- Korg tuners are great for both electric and acoustic
instruments. The Metronomes are digital and have many different features not
found on many metronomes. BEST BUY... The Korg tuner/metronome in one.
You save about $20, and you have both devices in one unit. The tuner is
chromatic, the metronome has the same features as the single unit, and you can
use both at the same time. This is especially handy for the violin students who
want to check intonation and still keep the beat at once. I also like the Sabine
Metrotune which is another 2-in-1. However, it is the same price as the Korg, but
you can only use one feature at a time. Next page
